If you’re tired of trawling Facebook Marketplace for a very particular IKEA sofa that was discontinued in 2006, there’s a new marketplace that might be of interest.
IKEA is set to launch a new tool for buying and selling second-hand furniture in the UK later this year, meaning there’ll be a new one-stop shop for all Kallax shelving units and Billy bookcases.
This is IKEA’s response to the likes of Facebook Marketplace, eBay and Gumtree, which are flooded with its products. Recently, there has been a wave of new second-hand retailers getting their mitts on the furniture market too, with Vinted now selling second-hand electronics and home furnishings. IKEA is clearly keen for a piece of the pie, as other apps have become the default spots for finding thrifted IKEA goods.
The IKEA Second-hand Marketplace is already live in several countries in Europe, where it is available as a free service with no listing or commission fees – but that’s due to end soon. From 1 January 2027, buyers will need to pay 5% of the purchase price to cover payment and support.
IKEA hasn’t yet confirmed how the functionality of its UK marketplace operations will work, but users will need to be IKEA Family members to use the service when it arrives. This is a free loyalty scheme, which also offers discounts on food, delivery and some products. In the existing European regions it operates in, IKEA’s marketplace allows sellers to receive a 15% bonus on the sale value if they choose an IKEA refund card, meaning you can increase the value of the sale if you invest back into IKEA.
The Second-hand Marketplace will support IKEA’s existing Buy Back service, which allows customers to return pre-loved IKEA products to the retailer in return for store credit.
What will you be able to sell on IKEA’s Second-hand Marketplace?
In the regions in which the marketplace is currently live, any current or historic IKEA product can be listed – except food items, mattresses and kitchen appliances. All products must be “in good working condition”.
