IKEA says goodbye to its iconic MALM range after two decades

A staple in households across the globe for more than 20 years, IKEA has confirmed that its popular MALM range is heading for retirement this year.

It’s the end of an era! One of IKEA’s most recognisable furniture collections is set to disappear from stores soon, with the retailer confirming it is phasing out its hugely popular MALM range after more than two decades.

Since launching in 2002, MALM has become the go-to choice for affordable, minimalist furniture. From its no-frills bed frames and bedside tables to its bestselling chest of drawers, the range has found its way into millions of first homes, rented flats, family bedrooms and guest rooms, thanks to its timeless Scandi styling, practical storage and budget-friendly price tags.

It’s a firm favourite with DIY enthusiasts too, inspiring countless upcycling projects on social media, from paint jobs and vinyl-wrapping to panelling, stencilling and statement handles, the MALM line has proved that simple designs can be transformed into bespoke-looking pieces without breaking the bank.

What is IKEA replacing MALM with?

IKEA has stated that the decision to remove MALM comes after a refresh of its bedroom lines and with the introduction of one of its newer collections, STORKLINTA. A similar style to MALM, STORKLINTA includes upgraded safety features designed to reduce the risk of furniture tipping over and to prevent more than one drawer opening at a time.

The brand-new STORKLINTA range is slowly being added to, with chests of drawers and bedside tables currently available to buy in IKEA’s signature white, oak, dark grey and dark brown finishes.

When will the MALM be range discontinued?

The MALM range is already labelled as 'Last chance' on IKEA’s website – with selected pieces reduced while stocks last. And although it won’t disappear overnight, the collection will gradually be withdrawn throughout 2026 and into 2027 – so if you've had your eye on a piece for a while, this could be your last chance to snap it up before it's gone for good!
